Face — Treatment

Profile,
not portrait.

The chin is a profile procedure. In front view, you rarely think about it. In side view, it carries everything — the nose, the lip, the neck. A small chin can make a normal nose look prominent; a strong chin balances the line from forehead to throat. Genioplasty is rarely about the chin in isolation.

Chin Reshaping — anatomical illustration

What it is & what it isn't

Two main approaches. A chin implant — a soft silicone shape placed in front of the bone through a small incision under the chin or inside the mouth — augments a small chin. A sliding genioplasty — cutting the bone and moving the segment forward, backward, or sideways, fixed with small plates — addresses more significant deficits or asymmetries.

What it isn't

Not a one-size answer. The implant suits modest deficits with simple geometry; the sliding genioplasty suits significant deficits, asymmetries, or vertical adjustments. We will tell you which is right for your anatomy — and we will tell you honestly when neither is the surgery you actually need.

These figures are typical ranges, for planning your trip. Your own treatment and recovery timeline is assessed and decided by Dr. Meral — at consultation, and again as your healing progresses.

How it unfolds

The consultation

Profile photographs analysed in three positions. The chin's relationship to the nose, the lip, the neck. Whether the issue is projection (forward/backward), vertical (long/short), asymmetry, or some combination. The right surgery follows the right analysis.

The plan

Implant or sliding genioplasty — chosen based on the analysis, not on what you walked in expecting. We sometimes simulate the result digitally so you can see, not just imagine.

The surgery

For an implant: a 1cm incision under the chin, a pocket created in front of the bone, the implant placed and fixed. For a sliding genioplasty: an incision inside the lower lip, the bone cut horizontally, the chin segment moved to the planned position, fixed with small titanium plates.

The first night

Soft food, mild swelling, head elevated. Most patients are surprised by how little it hurts.

Recovery

Bruising for 7–10 days. Numbness of the lower lip and chin skin for several weeks — this is normal, almost always resolves. Sutures out by day seven (intra-oral sutures dissolve). Eating returns to normal in about two weeks; talking is normal immediately. The final settled result emerges at two to three months, as residual swelling resolves.

A typical course, not a promise — healing differs from person to person. Dr. Meral reviews you at each follow-up and decides when each step is right for you.

This may be for you if

  • Your profile reads as if the chin is not supporting the nose and lip — even when both are otherwise fine
  • You've considered rhinoplasty and we agree the issue is partly the chin, not just the nose
  • Your chin is asymmetric, or projects forward in a way that doesn't fit the rest of your face
  • You understand: this is a profile surgery; the front view changes very little

This is not for you if

  • You're chasing a celebrity jawline that doesn't match your underlying bone structure
  • Your concerns are mostly about the neck below the jaw — a neck lift or submental liposuction may be the actual answer
  • You smoke heavily and aren't willing to stop — bone healing (sliding genioplasty) is meaningfully compromised
  • You expect a dramatic front-view change — chin surgery rarely delivers one
